THE MARYLAND NATURAL RESOURCE PHOTO CONTEST IS OPEN! The department is now accepting entries for its annual photo contest. Photographers, novice or professional, can enter for the chance to win cash, park passes, and other great prizes. Winning entries will be posted online, featured in the quarterly Maryland Natural Resource magazine, and placed in the next DNR wall calendar. The contest closes on August 1.

SONS OF MYSTRO Aug 4, 7-9pm, Columbia Lakefront, 10275 Wincopin Cir, Columbia, MD. This event will feature a fully curated food and drink menu by a local restaurant. Sons of Mystro (brothers Malcolm, 26, and Umoja, 23) use their violins to interpret reggae classics, American pop songs, and their own creations, accompanied by a DJ and a drummer. Winners of the Emerging Artist under 21yrs Old award at IRAWMA (International Reggae and World Music Awards), they have appeared on Showtime at the Apollo and Steve Harvey. Mentored by world-renown Black Violin, these artists' stars are on the rise.

LIVING HISTORY: 18TH & 19TH CENTURY WATER MILLS ON THE Upper Patuxent River. See an exhibit showing the history of mills that have been identified to date together. Meet Charles Henry Shaw, a 19th century millwright who worked in water mills in Howard & Montgomery Counties.

CHOPTEETH AFROFUNK BIG BAND September 8, 7-9pm, Columbia Lakefront, 10275 Wincopin Circle, Columbia, MD. This event will feature a fully curated food and drink menu by a local restaurant. Chopteeth is a 12-piece Afrofunk orchestra exploring the common groove between the funkiest, most hip-shakin' West African and American popular music on the planet. The core of the Chopteeth sound is Afrobeat: a big-band funk invented by Fela Kuti in 1970's Nigeria. Afrobeat is a spicy stew of modern jazz, Yoruba tribal music and burning, James Brown-inspired rhythms.

QUILT IN THE PARK Four County Quilters Guild invites the community to their quilt show "Quilts in the Park" on Saturday, September 17, from 10 AM to 3 PM at Piney Run Park-Pavilion #4, 30 Martz Road, Sykesville, MD. Admission to the quilt show is free and will feature members quilts hanging among the tall trees, wildlife challenge quilts, demonstrations throughout the day, and quilting crafts. QUILT BINGO Four County Quilters Guild is hosting their "Quilt Bingo" on Sunday, October 9, at the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company's Reception Hall on Twin Arch Road in Mt. Airy. The bingo will feature quilts made by members as the prizes. Doors open at 12:00; Lunch is served at 12:30; Bingo begins at 2:00. Tickets are $35 and price includes 20 regular games, lunch (prepared by the fire company auxiliary), and a ticket for the many door prizes that will be given away. Reserved seating is available for parties of 8 or more. Additional features include four specials, a jackpot, basket raffles and 50/50. BOX LUNCH TALK: METHODISM IN CARROLL COUNTY August 16, 12-1pm. Methodism in Carroll County. Speaker: Larry Bohn. Many recognize Carroll County as the Cradle of Methodism in the United States. In 1760, Methodist preacher Robert Strawbridge immigrated to America and settled on a small farm near Sam's Creek where he established a house church that met in his living room. Soon, Robert and his followers built a log meeting house, the first dedicated Methodist structure in America. Sixty-year Methodist Larry Bohn will trace Methodism's roots in Carroll County.

THE SOUTH CARROLL LIONESS LIONS CLUB is hosting an all day bingo on Saturday, August 27 at the Gamber Fire Hall, 3838 Niner Road Finksburg, MD 21048. Bingo enthusiasts, this bingo is for you! A fantastic fun-filled morning and afternoon of bingo has been planned. Includes continental breakfast, lunch, and admission packs for sessions 1 and 2. You will be notified if this occurs. Paid advance reservations are required for this event. Your reservation will be held with a minimum of a $25 deposit per person. CHURCH TO HOLD FOOD PANTRY Ebenezer United Methodist Church will hold the "Rock of Help" Food Pantry for anyone in the community in need of food from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. the third Saturday of each month at the food pantry building, behind the church, 4901 Woodbine Road, Winfield. Non-perishable foods, assorted frozen foods, a non-food household item and children's shoes are available. Due to COVID restrictions, the food pantry currently is strictly drive-through only. Church staff will put pre-loaded bags of food in your car. The food pantry will be held Saturday Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov.19 and Dec. 17, 2022. The church is one-half mile south of Liberty Road on Woodbine Road. PRAYER SHAWL GROUP A Prayer Shawl Group that meets every Tuesday from 1-3pm in the Parish Center. We knit and crochet shawls and give them to the Dove House and Little Sister's of the Poor or those who are sick and have lost a loved one.
